Hapag-Lloyd requires a reporting system that is compliant with biofuels and can align fuel consumption data with FuelEU Maritime requirements.

Hapag-Lloyd and Seaspan complete first methanol retrofit

StormGeo has revealed that Hapag-Lloyd is using its s-Log and s-Insight systems to monitor, report, and validate greenhouse gas intensity across its fleet to comply with FuelEU Maritime regulations. With around 300 containerships and a total transport capacity of over 2.3 million TEU, the German liner operator is faced with the major compliance task of reporting, validating, and verifying data under the EU regulation that took effect on 1 January 2025.

Hapag-Lloyd requires a reporting system that is compliant with biofuels and can align fuel consumption data with FuelEU Maritime requirements. StormGeo’s s-Log collects fuel consumption data, including that from biofuels, and applies validation rules to flag reporting errors and improve data quality.

The next step

The next step is for the validated consumption data to be converted into GHG intensity data. This can then be shared automatically with major emissions verifiers, including DNV, through APIs Hapag-Lloyd expects to have 13 LNG dual-fuel vessels in operation by the end of 2025.

Biofuels are already being used on up to 50 of its ships.

Biofuels, including FAME and bio-LNG, are already being used on up to 50 of its ships. These can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 95% when compared with conventional fuels.  "We must work with partners like StormGeo, who share our commitment to drive the shipping industry toward a more sustainable future," said Heribert Riesenhuber, Director of Fleet Energy Management at Hapag-Lloyd's Hamburg Head Office.

"Great solutions for environmental compliance have been yielded by our decade-long partnership, and not only us but the industry at large have been benefited, and we're excited to see our work with StormGeo continue to advance our decarbonisation goals and tackle new reporting requirements, such as FuelEU Maritime," he said.

The company's S-Log system has been upgraded

The Hamburg-based Fleet Performance Center is also being used by StormGeo to support Hapag-Lloyd, including discussions with verifiers. The company's S-Log system has been upgraded to include enhanced encryption for data reporting, data extraction and file uploads, as well as wider security improvements for sensitive data transmitted and stored within the system.

The first conversion under their joint methanol retrofit programme

Conversely, Hapag-Lloyd, one of the top five global container lines, and Seaspan Corporation, a global leader in maritime asset ownership and management, have completed the first conversion under their joint methanol retrofit programme. The delivery of the 'Seaspan Yangtze', the first of five 10,100 TEU charter vessels, marks the upgrade of a conventional MAN S90 engine to a dual-fuel engine capable of operating on methanol.
