This backlog is due to two factors: increased traffic diverted from Middle Eastern routes because of the war in Iran, and tighter restrictions on vessel numbers and cargo sizes caused by dry conditions related to El Niño.

To get around the bottlenecks, shipping companies are coming up with new ideas. Tracking data shows that two supertankers, the Panamax Energia Grandeur and the Neopanamax Eneos Wisdom, recently conducted a rare ship-to-ship transfer off the port of Balboa. This enabled one of the vessels to return through the canal while ensuring a continuous supply of LPG to Asia. . Traders report that smaller Panamax vessels using separate locks face less severe delays.

The Energia Grandeur

The Energia Grandeur had been en route to Japan before turning around, suggesting that its charterer, TotalEnergies SE, had decided that travelling along the canal was a more efficient way of getting to Asia than completing the month-long trip. When contacted by Bloomberg, both TotalEnergies and Eneos Holdings Inc., which has a stake in the management of the Eneos Wisdom, declined to comment.

Some vessels not transferring cargo are opting for extreme detours. The Gas Scorpio, for example, is currently circumnavigating South America, which adds roughly a month to its transit time, rather than waiting for access to the canal. The last time a similar long-distance rerouting occurred was in 2023, during previous drought-related delays.

Mounting pressures on global energy transport networks are highlighted by these logistical workarounds. 'The global LPG market is already under strain due to tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, and the Panama Canal is one more disruption that it simply cannot afford,' said Julian Renton, lead analyst at East Daley Analytics.

The congestion of the canal highlights how climate patterns and geopolitical conflicts can exacerbate existing vulnerabilities in the supply chain. Although current shipping surcharges may not immediately affect consumers, prolonged disruptions could eventually put pressure on energy prices and transportation stocks.
