The most recent financial statements from MSC's Italian holding company, Marinvest, disclose that the long-standing collaboration between Gianluigi Aponte and the Livorno-based shipping agency Spadoni has reached its conclusion after a period of fifty years – not through a dissolution, but through a comprehensive acquisition. Although MSC Italia (formerly the Genoa-based agency Le Navi) had already acquired a 51% stake in recent years, Spadoni remained the only Italian shipping agency to retain—at least formally—its independence. This special status reflects the gratitude that the Aponte family has always felt towards a partner and company that believed in MSC from its earliest days, when the shipping line was an outsider in the market — or even a newcomer.
The Aldo Spadoni Shipping Agency was established within the Livorno maritime community and was centred around Aldo Spadoni, an entrepreneur and shipping agent who was deeply rooted in the port. A pivotal moment in the agency's history occurred in the 1970s when Spadoni met Gianluigi Aponte, a young shipowner who was working to build what would eventually become MSC.

It is noteworthy that 1978 stands out as a key date. The agency's history was retrospectively reviewed, revealing that it was in that year that Aldo Spadoni recruited Aldo Corbani, who would play a pivotal role in the agency's growth during MSC's subsequent boom. Various sources describe this period as one of rapid expansion for MSC, which corresponded with the strengthening of the Spadoni agency. This culminated in the move to the current offices in Piazza dei Legnami. This sheds light on why a Swiss shipping company like MSC formed such a strong, historic bond with a particular agency in Livorno. The relationship dates back to the company’s pioneering days, and was not merely a commercial partnership established once MSC had already become a giant

The relationship between the shipowner and the agent was very important. When Aldo Spadoni passed away in 2013, Aponte personally attended the funeral. By that time, Maria Pia Spadoni and her son Luca had joined the agency, which continued to bear the founder's name. This helps to explain why the relationship went beyond the standard dynamic between a shipping company and its port agent. Spadoni supported MSC during the period when it was establishing its international network.
At the inception of his collaboration with Aponte, MSC was a far more diminutive enterprise. Over the decades, the group grew to become the world’s leading container shipping operator and one of the top four players in the cruise industry. That pioneering connection gave rise to a collaboration. This collaboration spanned more than forty years. It continues to this day. It will persist into the future, albeit in a different form
According to an account published after Spadoni’s death, he was one of the first people to believe in Aponte’s vision. He became Aponte’s first shipping agent, assisting with contracts, advice and operational support. Thus, their personal and professional relationship predated MSC’s transformation into a global giant in container shipping.
