The $120 billion global container shipping industry has depended heavily on goods from retailers.

Reuters : On Tuesday, the executive director of the Port of Los Angeles, LA the busiest seaport in the nation, announced that it had achieved its second-highest July volume, boosted by resilient demand for consumer goods and manufacturing and data centre construction equipment. This demand should support another strong result in August. Ocean container imports are an early indicator of U.S. economic activity and are closely monitored by analysts and traders.

Port of Long Beach reported its second busiest July.

Last month, the Port of Los Angeles processed 960,464 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of container cargo, including 499,552 TEUs of imports, according to its data. Last week, the neighbouring Port of Long Beach reported its second busiest July ever after handling 928,508 TEUs in total, including 467,461 TEUs of imports.'Based on what we're seeing today, we expect to handle more than 900,000 container units in August,' said Eugene D. Seroka, Executive Director, in a call with journalists.

The year's peak season

This year's peak season has already arrived, according to Seroka and other industry experts, with many holiday goods already having been delivered. Some retailers brought forward deliveries because the 10% global Section 122 tariffs expired in late July. Following a period of uncertainty, these were replaced by new tariffs of up to 12.5% on imports from 60 countries, which are accused of using forced labour.

The current pace would not continue indefinitely.

Nevertheless, Seroka said that the current pace would not continue indefinitely. He referred to a National Retail Federation forecast predicting strong imports in August, followed by a gradual slowdown until the end of the year. The global container shipping industry, which is worth $120 billion, has always depended a lot on goods from retailers. These retailers accounted for almost half of all the goods that were shipped, and they were the main reason for the industry's busy season, which was before the year-end holiday merchandise rush.
